The World’s Tallest Midget

For a variety of reasons…age differences…my growing family…my Air Force commitment…my rookie status…I didn’t become close friends with my DJ contemporaries.   Gary Allyn, who billed himself as the “World’s Tallest Midget,” was the exception.   Not actually a midget, Gary’s height became especially noticeable when he stood next to my skinny 6 foot 2 inch frame.  He had a great set of “pipes,” which is why he mostly worked the mid-day shifts at KONO.   Also, he looked really cool behind the wheel of a light green 1965 Buick Rivera that I’d kill to have today.

I never invited anyone to my home and was never invited to any of my radio coworker’s homes.  I think, it was primarily because I was always working--the night shift at KONO and days for the Air Force.   For some reason, Gary always knew when “Jivin” Jean was planning homemade meatloaf, and often joined our growing family for a home cooked meal, which must have been especially satisfying for a single man.

Those were pleasant and memorable evenings with Gary and the only time one of my contemporaries visited my home.
