Who Am I?
S/Sgt George H. Bason had a weekly USAF Lackland News report weekly
on KENS Radio.
George Hall got a “first paying” radio job at KBOP, Pleasanton, TX while
stationed at Lackland AFB, and then moved to San Antonio's KAPE as weekend DJ/News reader. Next, I was hired at KONO News by John
Wilson for weekend news and fired by owner, Jack Roth after my first Sunday
morning newscast. Yes, I was that BAD!
I didn’t want to go back to KBOP so I went to San Marcos, TX.
After
working part-time at KCNY, San Marcos, honing my skills, I met with George
Cooper, who convinced Program Director, Doug China, to hire me back at
KONO. China didn’t want two George’s
on the staff and asked me to come up with a new “air” name. Simple, HUH? Since I have four sons, I started with Lee Douglas. No deal since there was already a Lee
“Baby” Sims at KTSA. Next I picked son
#2, Lon Alan. Strike
two! Allen Dale was established at
WOAI. Two names left so Guy Howard was
a sure bet. NOPE! Howard Edwards was doing mornings on
KONO. I ran out of names because son
#4 is Glen Edward.
Don Green became the last moniker when China went into the FM control
room next door and started browsing through record albums (remember them?) and
picked it off the back of a record album.
Skinny Don Green developed and remained throughout my rather
short on-air radio career.
Don Bason became my new
identity when we went to McAllen, TX to become GM of KBFM (KB104) located in
Edinburg.
George Bason returned in 2000, after 26 years (3 years at KBFM) followed
by my own ad agency (Advertir) for the Rio Grande Valley then Sales Manager for
CableTime and numerous other positions including ownership of The Cycle Center
with multiple brands, headed by Harley-Davidson.
Most
of my "radio days" friends still call me Skinny.
