It was a Saturday Afternoon in 1980 and I was on the air at KITY. Gentleman Jim Carter was on KONO. We decided to call Leif Calberg at KZ100, Johnny Shannon at KTSA, and Steve Michaels at KTFM and tell them of our idea to play the same song at the same time. Since these were the five popular music stations, we knew listeners upon hearing a re-current song would probably search for a better or different song.
Jim and I debate which song it was. I say it was “Second Time Around” by Shalimar, and he remembers it as “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc. I'm younger and I have more of my brain cells, so I am pretty sure it was “Second Time Around.
Well, we all played the same song at the same time. I'm sure listeners were just amazed when they pushed buttons on their radio and found that all their favorite music stations were playing the same song–I know Angela (not Angela Wright who was on KITY some years later) was. I got a call from her on the hotline. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She had dialed around and heard all of us playing the same song at the same time.
Ah...the power of radio.

Notes from Mark Carrillo:
A native of San Antonio, I worked with Don Couser, Bruce Hathaway, Ricci Ware, and B. Bailey Brown. I couldn’t go to school in the 60s without getting my morning fix of Howard Edwards ringing the cowbell and saying “Fair Dinkum.” With Howard, Don, Bruce, B. Bailey, and Jockey John Steel as my biggest influences, I was a huge fan of radio and knew that’s what I wanted to do at an early age.
I started at KTSA and KTFM in the late 70s doing news. Then I went to KITY as a jock and was Assistant Program Director of KONO/KITY. I worked at KISS/KMAC, KTUF, KSJL, KSAQ (Q96), Y100, 1067JAMZ, and finally, I was the last live afternoon jock on KKYX.
I hosted “Jammin’” on KENS-TV in the mid-80s (think “Swingtime”), a Country themed dance and video show “San Antonio Steppin’ Out,” and I did a lot of on camera commercials with Robin Ancira for the Ancira dealerships in the 90s.
You can check me out in the motion picture “Selena.” I’m the guy (in a fat suit) that double dog dares Selena to bungee jump.
Currently, I am an Account Executive for MySA.com. I am the voice of Ancira Winton Chevrolet and Ancira Chrysler Jeep. I do voice-over work for KENS 5. Also, I am the lead singer of an Oldies/Classic Rock band “The Psychedelic Jukebox. (You can see videos of us at YouTube.com).
