I have many fond memories of San Antonio radio. I had the opportunity to work several
different formats: from Hard Rock KXZL
(now KZEP), to AC/Oldies Magic 105, to CHR/Urban KTFM. I actually came to San Antonio from Dallas
to work the morning shift at a new station (which is now a Country
legend), KJ97.
The KJ97 studios were close to Loop 410 and IH10 West. Our
sister station, News Talk WOAI was right across the hall. At the time Clear Channel Communications
owned only four stations--two in San Antonio, one in Austin and one in Tulsa.
One sunny summer morning, I had just finished a break on the
air and started my next song playing. I
grabbed my empty coffee cup, exited the studio, ran around the corner and down
a long narrow hall to the break room to get a refill. I was in a hurry. The
song playing on the air was rather short.
As I ran down the narrow hallway back to the control room, the door to
one of WOAI's studios opened and a man stepped out directly in front of me. To
my surprise and absolute delight, I found myself face-to-face with Charleton
Heston! Previously unknown to me, Mr.
Heston was being interviewed on WOAI's morning talk show.
I immediately fell to my knees and held out both arms bowing
in praise and chanting "MOSES!"
He reached down and touched my head and said, "Rise my
son." We both laughed and shook hands. Then I quickly picked up my hot coffee, just barely making it
back to the KJ97 control room before the song faded!
