Before production companies like PAMS in
Dallas produced customized jingles, disc jockeys would typically open their
show each hour with a musical selection that fit the mood of their
program. As I worked my way up from a
250 watt station in Pleasanton, Texas to KAPE in San Antonio, I envied the “big
station” DJs like George Cooper at KONO and Bruce Hathaway at KTSA, who had
jingles made especially for them. Their
contemporaries had personalized jingles as well.
When I finally got my chance to work at
KONO, I didn’t get my own jingle. I
just kept using “You Can’t Sit Down Part II” by Phil Upchurch. With the advent of the Green Light Club, I
later switched to Green Door by Jim Lowe.
They were good show intros but neither was made especially for me.
After a short time I became very
frustrated that Howard Edwards, “Easy” Ed Dunn, Doug China and all the other
KONO DJ’s each had a customized jingle, but I STILL didn’t.
Even though the possibility existed that
it might bring about the demise of Skinny Don Green on KONO, I decided to
embark on a one-man crusade for my own custom jingle. Each evening during my show I would make on-air references to
the non-existent jingle and plead my case to the multitudes listening that I
really needed a customized jingle.
My plan worked. My wish was
finally fulfilled when I got my own KONO PAMS jingle.

Skinny Don Green Note: Paul Kirby asked me if I remembered the big
flap I created at KONO over a custom jingle for my show intro. I did remember, and now you know how it
happened.
