I’ve
always been into cars and was a regular at the local drag strip where I
competed with my ’56 Chevy.
I also
owned a 1939 Plymouth 6 cylinder business coupe when I went to work for
KONO. How it wound up in Daytona
Beach, Florida is another story, but while there, I bought a junk ‘55 Dodge so
I could install the V8 engine in the Plymouth.
Work on
the V8 install went more slowly than I anticipated and it wasn’t close to
completion when I decided to return to KONO.
I contracted with a Daytona Beach shop to complete the job I started and
had them call me when it was ready.
I
returned to San Antonio without the Plymouth.
So, I needed to plan a trip back to bring it home.
I
started a listener contest for the person who could guess the actual time, in
days, hours and minutes for the round trip elapsed time it would take to travel
to Daytona Beach and return.
The
closest answer was 74 hours, 25 minutes and 14 seconds, and that was an
underestimation of 7 hours, 4 minutes and 59 seconds.
Edward
Lowes won the contest, which meant he won a free ride to and from school with
me each day for a week in the classic coupe.
Half
the students of Highlands High School were envious of the sophomore in the
passenger seat that Monday morning in December 1966. We had a crowd of his friends and my fans waiting every morning
for our arrival and every afternoon as we departed.
Because
the San Antonio area culture is predominantly Hispanic, I named the car
“GreenGo” (gringo) and appropriately painted it emerald green with that name,
and the station’s logo on the doors.
I hope
Edward still has many fond and indelible memories of the event. I know I do.
