The late
Tom Poston and Tim Conway were starring in a two-man show at the Majestic
Theatre in downtown San Antonio. The promoter of the show asked if
I would do an interview with them since, in addition to my sports duties, I
also did a lot of feature story reporting for KENS-TV.
I arrived
at the Majestic and I found both actors backstage. When I
suggested, "Hey, it's better color if we go outside on such a pretty
day, so let's do the interview in front of the marquee," they
agreed. So we set things up outside for the
interview. As I was about to ask my first question, Tim Conway
grabbed my microphone, began interviewing me, and Tom Poston. When
a bus stopped nearby, he walked to it and started interviewing the exiting
passengers.
Tim was
hilarious. Tom Poston added to the fun with his quips and
dry humor. By that time a crowd had gathered and Tim really played
it up. After a few minutes Tim looked directly at the camera and
said, "Well…That's the story. From downtown San Antonio, with Tom
Poston and Gary DeLaune, I'm Tim Conway for EyeWitness News."
The
promoter loved it. The “interview” ended up being even better than
the paid advertising for the event. In fact, the promoter was so impressed
that she asked me to appear in the Will Rogers Follies the following
month. I had a cameo role as Wiley Post. However, this
time I knew that I couldn't depend on Tim Conway to bail me out.
I will
always have a great memory of two Hollywood/TV stars, who enjoyed themselves
and were not absorbed with their own egos.
