Five years after my
first stint, I was back at KONO. Jack
Roth had given Jo Jo Kincaid permission to hire me. My first air shift was on a Saturday
evening. I had not yet been issued a
door key, but there was a button near the side of the front door that,
when pressed, would alert whoever was in the building that someone was at the
door. Like most jocks working a weekend
shift, I had arrived with just enough time to sit down at the board
and immediately start my show. I pressed the button over and over. Still there was no response.
Time was running
out. I decided to kick the metal frame
around the glass door (near the bottom) in hopes that someone would hear the
noise and let me in. My foot slipped. I missed the frame and kicked out the door
glass instead. Glass went scattering
everywhere. It was a mess! I was afraid that I had just lost my gig
before I even got started.
Fortunately, Jack
Roth took the cost of the glass out of my paycheck, all was forgiven
and forgotten, and I began a three-year run at "The Big
86."
I got lucky!
