Christmas Dinner
It was December 1975.
As was the custom at that time, I had mailed a reel-to-reel air check
from Michigan to Carl Truman Wiglesworth for an afternoon drive / production
director position at KONO.
I was thrilled when I actually received a phone call from
Carl. Getting an acknowledgement of any
kind upon receipt of an air check is always uplifting!
As I recall, Carl was soft-spoken and rather formal. He was concerned about some things I had
said in my air check and also my qualifications for the open position. I assured him that I had the skills and
experience necessary not only for the air shift, but also the production
job. He told me there were one or two other
candidates he was considering for the position, and that he would make his
decision very soon.
A couple of days later Carl called back and tendered an
offer, which was predicated on when I could get to San Antonio. It was December 18th. I told him I would be happy to be in San
Antonio between Christmas and New Years Day.
At that point Carl mentioned his second choice was someone local who
could start immediately. If I wanted
the job, I would have to arrive before Christmas.
I did want the job, so I said a quick goodbye to my family,
loaded everything I owned into my Spirit of 76 Dodge (boy did I take
grief on that ride!) and headed south.
I reached San Antonio on December 23rd, and checked into my temporary
housing, which was a LaQuinta Inn.
On Christmas Eve, Lee Woods came in for his KITY air
shift. When he found out that I was the
“new guy,” he invited me over for Christmas Dinner. I will never forget Lee’s kindness and a great Christmas Dinner.
