Name Recognition
In the late 60s KBUC had a disc
jockey named Edward D. Kalka, who went by the air name of Eddie Daniels.
Then…Glenn Daniels came to
KBUC. In order to avoid confusion,
Glenn decided to use his middle name, Dean. So he became “Big Daddy” Glenn Dean.
Finally KBUC hired James
Dean. You know that Dean was not going
to work for a last name at KBUC. So,
Jim went from one famous name to another, by taking the last name of a famous
Texan and becoming Jim Travis.
As far as I know KBUC never got a
disc jockey with the name of Travis so I guess the story ends there.

Some notes from G. Dean
Daniels: My father succeeded Jim Rose as Program
Director at KBUC. He quit KBUC to start
an advertising agency with Odey Crabtree--Mark VII. Some of the management at KBUC embarked on a campaign to put
Dad and Odey out of business. This
included refusal to recognize Mark VII as an advertising agency, thereby
disallowing the normal ad agency discount.
Needless to say…it didn't work.
In fact, the next year Mark VII cost KBUC six figures in advertising
revenue, because Dad and Odey converted clients from KBUC to television. With much hard work, Mark VII eventually
evolved into a top player in the San Antonio marketplace.
Ten years later, my father went on to even bigger
things when he created and founded CMT - "Country Music Television."
