Missing
W
I was the mid-day guy for “The Big 12” WOAI in the early 70s. Larry Kent did mornings and George “Super” Cooper followed me in the afternoons. Cliff Hunter was the General Manager, and Bob Guthrie was the News Director.
I especially remember our “Missing ‘W’ Contest.” The contest premise was…Our “K” call letter radio station competitors were jealous that WOAI was the only station in San Antonio whose call letters started with a “W.” Therefore, our "K" competitors stole our "W" and hid it somewhere in San Antonio. We enlisted our listener’s help to find the missing “W.“ Until the missing “W” was found, we were going to have to be just “OAI.”
By the way, our missing “W” turned up at the San Antonio Water System (water department). Where else would you find a missing “W” in San Antonio?

George L. Davis Note: I met my wife in San Antonio. She was a waitress at the El Tropicana Hotel…just block away from the downtown studio location of WOAI. I have many fond memories of the Alamo City.
