Bill Allert, one of the KONO News reporters, was part of the “So You Want To Be A Cop” (COP) program. In my opinion, COP was a predecessor of the current television program “Cops.”
Bill, as part of the COP team, on Saturday nights would chase
down San Antonio Police Department radio calls, rush to various police scenes
in the KONO Big Red Mobile News Unit and record the events, which were edited
for the COP broadcast on Sunday evenings.
Later, Bill became a film reporter/cameraman for KONO-TV,
along with Jim Logan. George Sharman
was the first news anchor for the top-rated, 12 Star Final news. Later, Tom Ellis moved from KONO radio to
news anchor for 12 Star Final.
The KONO programming format changed throughout the broadcast
day and broadcast week until late 1958.
At that time, Jack Roth hired Bob Cooper away from Gordon McLendon’s
KTSA, to program KONO. This started the
big competition between KONO and KTSA.
Maudie Sullivan worked in the KONO record library. Next came a succession of job tasks for
Maudie: secretary for Jim Brown,
secretary for Bob Roth, and finally Jack Roth’s administrative assistant. Maudie got married to Jerry Miller (me) in
June 1959. I was KONO Program Director
at the time.
